BACKGROUND PROCESS

Candidates who are successful in the testing process must complete an in-depth personal history questionnaire and successfully complete all aspects of the background investigation which will include:

Military/Education Experience
Credit History
Employment History
Driving History
Criminal History
Drug Usage
Personal and Neighborhood References
Psychological Evaluation (Officer Candidates only)
Truth Verification Examination (Officer Candidates only)
Physical/Drug Screening

Automatic Disqualifiers

You should be aware before starting the application process that you will automatically be eliminated for any of the following:

A. Ever been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.

B. Ever illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana.

C. Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug for any purpose within the 3 years prior to application (2 years for Public Safety Aide and Communications Operator).

D. Illegally used marijuana for any purpose within the year prior to application.

E. Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed as a law enforcement officer.

F. Ever used heroin, phencyclidine (PCP), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), Psilysibin (Mushrooms), or Ecstasy.

The following apply only to Police Officer and Public Safety Aide candidates.

G. Ever used any controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug not already listed above (Ex. Cocaine, or any prescription drug not prescribed to you) that exceeds:

i. A total of five times, or
ii. One time since becoming 21 years old.

H. Any tattoo that falls in to one of the below listed categories. All other tattoos must be concealed by authorized uniform items.

i. Located on the hands, neck, face, scalp, or head
ii. Are offensive in nature regardless of location

I. Visible body mutilation. This includes “plug” or “gauge” style earrings.
