TRAINING ACADEMY

Police Officer

Applicants who successfully complete the selection process and are offered employment as a police officer will attend a structured and demanding 980+ hour training program. This training will be held at the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy that usually runs January to June or July to December.

Police Officers will receive law enforcement training in numerous topics to include:

    • Policy and Procedure
    • Ethics in Law Enforcement
    • Firearms
    • Defensive Tactics
    • Drill and Discipline
    • Use of Force
    • Emergency Vehicle Operations
    • Constitutional Law
    • Criminal Law
    • Traffic Law
    • Laws of Arrest
    • Drug Identification and Enforcement
    • Active Shooter

There will be numerous written tests and skills tests throughout the academy. There will also be scenario based practical application testing.

Police officers who successfully complete the training program will graduate and be sworn in as Ocean City Police Officers. Police Officers are assigned to one of the five shifts attached to the Patrol Division.

Public Safety Officer

Applicants who successfully complete the selection process and are offered employment as a Public Safety Officer will attend 2 week long training program. As of right now, we will be holding 2 separate training academies, one the beginning of May and another one 2 weeks later.

Public Safety Officer Recruits will receive training in numerous topics to include:

    • CPR and First Aid
    • Ethics in Law Enforcement
    • Booking Process
    • Prisoner Care and Security
    • Towing and Parking Enforcement
    • Radio Communication
    • Emergency Vehicle Operation
    • Traffic Control
    • CJIS Fingerprinting
    • Defensive Tactics and Crowd Control

Public Safety Officers who successfully complete the training program are assigned to one of five Patrol shifts or one of four Arrest and Detention shifts. Public Safety Officers who will be 21 years of age by the following summer will be afforded the opportunity to begin their Full-time Police Officer testing during the summer.
